Americans rely heavily on cell phones to perform daily activities. Cell phone are used for phone calls, email, sending text messages, surfing the internet, and performing other tasks. It is unfortunate that many of these daily activities occur while a person is driving. As a result, an increase of accidents and fatalities have occurred because of the use of cellular phones while driving. Using a cell phone while driving is an epidemic that has taken our nation by storm. Most drivers believe they can safely drive a motor vehicle while using their cell phones. The United States government must put an end to the use of the cell phones while operating a motor vehicle by taking action with laws prohibiting the use of these devices while operating a motor vehicle. There are three main points which supports the banning of cell phones while driving. First of all, by using the cell phone while driving, the driver will experience visual distraction which takes the driver s eyes off the road onto the cell phone. Secondly, the driver will experience a physical distraction by having to release the steering wheel to attend to the cell phone. Introduction The US is a racially diverse country, and many societies do not share like that we except many different races or culture, so much so that they wish that all African American would move to Africa, etc. and it does not stop there, it can trickle into the work environment. They also do not like people from different cultures, especially if they are from a nation like Iran. Its kind of funny though, with all the talk about the need for this great quality education nobody ever says exactly what it is. While examining this strange phenomenon Ive discovered the basic universal elements of a quality education. Ive also learned that everyone has different standards by which they judge what is and what isnt a quality education, different groups are treated differently, the importance of home education and the effects that my own pursuits of education have had on me. Depending upon who you ask you will almost always receive a different response as to what the qualities of a good education are. However, most will agree that there are four basic elements to a quality education. The first and most important to our survival is the ability to compete in the job market. Without this many, if not all of us would find it impossible to play a significant role in society. Also included, but often ignored element of education is our ability to interact with others. Every day of our lives we will be required to interact with another person or many people. School provides us with the perfect opportunity to learn how to get along with others with minimal conflict. This could perhaps be the single most element of education. Education also provides us with an education of our own culture. In a school setting the extent of the information often varies depending on which culture is being studied. Much of the time, if not all, the primary focus is on European and W estern civilization. Asian, African, Indian, and South American civilization ten to be ignored in comparison to European cultures which we are required to learn from the time we enter school and many times beyond the time we leave school. Since these cultures are often ignored much of the cultural knowledge for minorities is provided by family and passed on from generation to generation through oral stories like corn mother and through artifacts. Take the employer for example. The employer sees a good education as having the proper training to perform the job correctly in the workplace, we place a significant amount of importance in the knowledge of ourselves. The same also goes for minorities which are many times provided with sub-standard learning facilities. One group that I personally am guilty of treating differently are those who speak languages other than English. Often I encounter people who speak little or no English and many times I have to remind myself that they are not stupid, instead they just dont speak my language just as I dont speak theirs. During elementary and high school I never felt the need to do homework feeling that I have much better things to do than homework and studying, but wouldnt be able to do any of them if I didnt study. As a parent, I knew that this was a major developmental stage for a three-year old in advancement of creativity and I supported her by stopping what I was doing and playing with her in the tone of dramatic play. I knew that she generally did not think these were real, since she sort of became embarrassed when she said something silly, in the tone of the characters she was playing with. She smiled in these cases, and I knew that I need not worry that she was taking these situations to heart and thinking that these toy animals were real-life. When Olivia was four, she was starting to develop an imaginary friend. I was sort of concerned, since she has been known to be anti-social in some situations, having only a few friends. And when she started to blame accidents and bad behaviors on the imaginary friend, I thought for some time that the friend might be some cause for concern. In this case, I intervened and watched her play with her imaginary friend. I did not want her to resort to relying only on a companion that was not real. But as in the same situation with the toy animals and cartoons, she laughed when talking about the acquaintance becoming real. In this, I knew that she was only using this imaginary friend for free-time play and was not using it for all of her social situations. According to the text, children who partake in socio-dramatic play at an early age may become better at following classroom rules and regulating emotions in self-control (p.322). When I saw this information, I had such relief in that she would be developing her self-control abilities with make-believe play, which would be readying her for kindergarten. Also, children that participate in make-believe play would be developing skills and competencies for when the real situations arise in development, such as pretending to go to sleep at a certain time and pretending to make a big meal for a family. In recent studies, socio-dramatic play has helped preschooler’s interactions to last longer with playmates, to show more involvement in some activities, and to become more cooperative (p.319). I was really excited to hear this statement, since Olivia has always seemed to be more of an outsider, related to others of her age-group. But with the development of dramatic play, she might have become more involved with the people around her that were of the same age. Since she was starting to have an imaginary friend, I was becoming concerned. I wanted her to interact with real people, rather than someone who was not really there, but it has not seemed to affect her social development in school up until today. It was good to see that she dropped the use of this friend around the age of 4  ½. 3. Describe any behavioral or emotional problems your child experienced during early childhood. Why do you think the problem(s) occurred and what did you do about them? At the age of three, Olivia was having emotional outbursts, such as temper tantrums, when she did not get what she wanted at stores or local restaurants, which was so embarrassing. I really wanted to start to go to family-style, more elegant restaurants, but I did not know if she was going to break into an outburst during dinner. So we could only go to fast food-style restaurants for the longest time. She would never sit still and would become squeamish and loud during dinner. After some time, an event changed the way she was acting. My husband and I were having an argument about something, and Olivia witnessed it. She began to cry as my husband walked out the door and she thought he was running away. After reassuring her that he would never run away from her, she started to act better and began to listen to our requests of how we wanted her to behave, with stricter rules. She might have also had some emotional issues, since she was shy and reluctant to be a leader in a group. I witnessed this when some of the other children were pushing her around, since she always was real passive in certain situations. So to fix this emotional deficit, my partner and I started to have play-dates at our house, where other children could come over and play with Olivia. This seemed to help her emotionally in relation to making friends and being more confident at daycare. As time went on with her making new friends, she started to regress in her proper skills of listening and being compliant. She was becoming more aggressive at daycare, but not at home and was starting to forget certain rules that were supported at home. By applying more rules and positive reinforcement for her good behaviors, this regression resolved very quickly. When she was four, she was starting to become more behaved in these public settings, which I felt had something to do with the more restrictive rules my partner and I put on her, and through rewarding her good behavior. With new situations, no matter how many play-dates we had at home, she would only cling to those certain people and not to others. So with the new tasks she had to take on in preparing for kindergarten, she was very reluctant to meet new people without some help. She became emotionally unstable when presented with harder tasks in preparation for school and would whine or cry in these situations. She was also starting to show some behavioral regression in terms of the new addition, Lydia, to the family, presenting signs of major jealousy. I think this was because she thought she was being replaced, or maybe that my partner and I were not showing her the attention that she was used to receiving. By letting her be included in care and activities with Lydia, Olivia was starting to love being around her new little sister. 4. How would you characterize your child’s personality using the descriptions provided at the beginning of age 3 in the MVC program? Provide examples from your child’s early childhood period to support your conclusion. When the MVC program described the different types of personalities of children, I thought that Olivia’s personality type was characteristic of the over-controlled category. She is very cooperative most of the time, follows the rules, but is shy in new social situations and clingy to familiar people  under stressful situations. There really was no denying it; this category sounds just like Olivia. When preparing her for kindergarten, she was so very shy in meeting new people and trying new and advanced situations while trying to hurry. She always seemed to want to watch other people first, and then try the activity. She did very well with her vocabulary, relationships, classifying, counting, art and math activities, but she was very clingy to the instructor before she started these activities. An example of Olivia being cooperative would be, when she was in preschool at the age of three, she would respond to the teacher’s requests of activities and would play non-aggressively with the few friends that she had. When she performed her skills, she was not easily distracted and focused very well on the tasks at hand. When she did not follow the rules, either in school or at home, she would become upset or try to ask for forgiveness related to these topics. 5. Cartoons that became aggressive or violent even at a G level, she would become frightened and even more nervous when these activities were taking place. When Olivia was three, she would perform imaginative play with the characters in the television series or talk to the television. She watched shows that were more educational on a regular basis, which I had noticed. They had helped with her language development skills. She usually sat in front of the television dancing and naming letters and numbers along with the main characters. According to the text, researchers suggest that the more time that a child watches television, the less time that they have to socialize and read; hence the lower academic scores (p. 352). In Olivia’s case, she was only allowed to watch her 30 minute show and an occasional evening family G-rated movie with the family before bedtime. I do not think this time was affecting her development in knowledge since I had noticed various words that were above her intellectual age group used in her sentences. But a benefit that the text has suggested about educational television is that it can be associated with gains in early literacy, math skills and academic progress (p.353). With shows such as Sesame Street, children have been getting better scores on testing, reading more books and have been placing higher value on achievement of skills in later development and in make believe play (p.353).

Of Mice and Men Essay The action comes full circle as George destroys Lennie at the end of the novel. Steinbeck purposely wrote the novel so that it could be turned into a play. Each chapter starts with the description of a scene; the characters come in, speak and then go off as they would in a play. The story is set in 1930s America. It was written in 1937. America and Particularly California was the land of opportunity. It was believed that any person could make their fortune and achieve success by working hard. This was called The American Dream and is what Lennie, George and later on in the film Candy hoped to achieve. This was the America that Steinbeck knew of and experienced this kind of life, because he was alive at this time. The American Dream was destroyed by the depression of the 1930s. The Wall Street Crash in 1929 when the stock markets collapsed triggered this and thousands of people lost everything they had. Hardly anyone could find work easily and many people were driven to become workers travelling from place to place not getting much money, like George and Lennie. Other problems of that time were that farming was easier, they used combine harvesters and other machinery, and so fewer men were needed to do the same jobs. Poor farming methods of that time meant that thousands of acres of farmland dried up rapidly, and became dry deserts. The landscape in the new film reflects the reality of the landscape more clearly and the viewers understood what it was like by watching it. There have been three film versions of the novel Of Mice and Men. Now I will compare the two film versions. Both versions are very effective and brilliant techniques have been used. The older version was made for television, it is episodic, and the new one is in film version. The new film contains well-known actors. Gary Sinise and John Malkovich, this makes more people want to watch it. In the new film we see no action until the titles have finished, which is more effective. In the opening of the new film the camera crosscuts between long shots and close-ups during the chase to highlight the danger. They focus on George and Lennie a bit more than they do with other characters at the beginning. I think they do this so the viewers realise who the main characters are and can get to know them. There are close-ups in Aunt Claras house. Lennie is given a big piece of pie and George gets a small piece. Lennie is shown as being a big kid. In the 1992 version there close-up shots of the mens faces on the train, we see their relief of escaping. They are safe. You hear the sound of the train as the white writing comes down over the black screen. This is very effective and makes you want to keep watching. The train scene is not actually used in the text. The director has added this to make his film more interesting and effective. The lighting in both versions of the novel were quite natural, no use of fake lighting. The director does this to make it more realistic. In the new version of the film the scene changing is very effective. The music in the opening of the old version is varied; it is played on a flute to give a pleasant and optimistic feeling. It becomes intense as the action picks up. This is to reflect the danger and the fear of Lennie and George as they are running. George doesnt want to take care of Lennie anymore and he plans to leave him. When he does this the music becomes quieter. It reflects whats happening in the plot. In the 1992 film version the music is more dramatic. It keeps you in suspense and is more atmospheric. It starts with piano music and then the sound of the train comes in. They do this to make the opening more effective and attention grabbing. The costumes are more or less the same in both versions of the film. They are ragged and dirty. George and Lennie have cravats tied around their necks, and hats. When George and Lennie go to visit Aunt Clara in the old version of the film, Lennie repeats George when presented to Aunt Clara. Yes mam. The director has added this scene into the old version. In the novel the only time she appears is in Lennies imagination. This scene has been included to put Lennie into context; it gives him a background, and shows that he has always been looked after and that the people who know him still treat him like a baby. It also serves to highlight Lennies reliance on George. As an audience we feel really sorry for Lennie when George tricked him to try and free himself from responsibility of looking out for Lennie. Lennie is more childish in the new film. You feel more sympathy for him in the old version. In the 1981 version of the film Curleys wife is portrayed as a bit of a tart, her dressed are tight fitting and she wears lots of makeup. In the scene when she is murdered, she is wearing a tight fitting, black knee length dress with a flower on it. Black represents experience. She has bright red shoes and red earrings. The description of her in the novel is more or less the same as the way she is presented in the films. In the newer version she is wearing a white dress. This represents innocence. She speaks quietly and is quite flirtatious; she is attentive when Lennie is speaking to her. When Lennie murders her, she screams a lot and is more dramatic in the new film. This draws attention to the viewer and gives a slight chill. The men are outside playing their game, they are so near, yet they dont hear her screaming or come to help. It makes it more sinister. When Lennie and Curleys wife are talking in the old film, Lennie doesnt listen to her much and interrupts, but in the newer version he sits and looks like he understands and he listens to her carefully. This makes the audience feel sorry for Lennie in a way because he acts like a big baby. He interrupts and talks about his things and doesnt listen to what Curleys wife is saying. Also, it gives a slight chill because one minute Lennie is being nice to Curleys wife and the next, he kills her. Curleys wife becomes very flirtatious and asks Lennie to stroke her hair. This all leads to the murder. He enjoys this and she looks like she enjoys it. She is more excited in the newer version, there is heavy breathing and she shows that she likes it a lot. Lennie stares at her a lot and there are lots of close-ups of this. In the older version when Lennie kills her, you see the close-up of his hand over her mouth. The camera switches from a low angle shot of her feet to a close up of her face where we see the fear in her eyes and then the camera goes back to her feet where one of her shoes fall off. This is very effective because we see just enough of her eyes to see how scared she is. Then there is the very sad and final indignity where she loses her shoe in death and she has been so proud of her appearance. Then the episode ends to create suspense. The newer version is much closer to the novel. There are only long and mid-shots of Lennie holding her enough to break her neck. There is quiet music up until Lennie starts becoming fierce. The music is more dramatic and brings an atmosphere. The volume increases to show that its important. It keeps the audience hooked. In the older version there is slow haunting music when she dies. This makes it creepy for the viewer.

An Argument for Vegetarianism ABSTRACT: In this paper I propose to answer the age-old reductio against vegetarianism, which is usually presented in the form of a sarcastic question ( e.g., "How do you justify killing and eating plants?"). Addressing the question takes on special significance in the light of arguments which seem to show that even nonsentient life is intrinsically valuable. Thus, I suggest that we rephrase the question in the following manner: When beings (who are biological and thus dependent on the destruction of other forms of life in order to sustain their own) evolve into societies of moral agents are they entitled merely to assume that they retain their license to destroy other life in order to sustain their own? I answer in the negative. I argue that such societies must continually earn that right by engaging in activity that makes up for and augments the values that they destroy. Unlike other biological beings, humans have complete control over what they eat, whether they eat, and whether t hey reproduce. Hence, the appeals to necessity that are ubiquitous in justifications of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian diets are inauthentic and must be accordingly forsaken. We will have to appeal instead to the value of particular human activities that are fueled by our consumption of other lives. 'So you don't eat animals, but you do eat plants. Plants, like animals, are living things how do you justify killing and eating them?' The mock indignation and air of self-congratulation which invariably accompany this question make it plain that the speaker does not expect the requested information but rather believes that he or she has delivered an original and decisive reductio ad absurdum against vegetariani... ...sort of axiology that last-person arguments are meant to establish. All creatures imaginable are valued and are attributed with at least one sense, from human beings (five-sensed) to leeches (two-sensed) to clods of earth (one-sensed). Any intentional act of violence against any of these is considered sinful, even an act done for a good cause (e.g., to feed human beings). It is odd, then, that Jainism is merely dismissed in environmentalist literature (Nash 1989, 70; Kalupahana 1989, 248; Curtin 1992, 141 n. 12). (3) My complaint here is against the deliberate ascetic. When people lead meager lives on the edge of physical exhaustion and starvation because of the inequities of economic distribution, it is not they but their oppressors who do an injustice to the environment, using the latter to fill their bellies and their wallets through acts of social injustice.

The Movie Ball of Fire

The movie â€Å"Ball of Fire† is a comedy film that is released in the year 1941, which tells the story about a group of professors that have been working themselves for several years to finish an encyclopedia and depicts the story of the group’s encounter with a nightclub performer who provides her own profound source of unique knowledge (Ball of Fire-1941). As such, the film is also known as the â€Å"The Professor and the Burlesque Queen,† which presents early movie stars namely Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck for the lead role in the movie (Ball of Fire-1941).For the supporting roles, movie artists like Oskar Homolka, Richard Haydn, Henry Travers, Dan Duryea, Elisha Cook Jr. and Dana Andrews have done an amazing participation in the overall positive outcome of the story (Ball of Fire-1941). Moreover, the movie tells the story of a group of eight mild-mannered professors who are working hard in compiling an encyclopedia. Their work is seen to be monotonous an d boring but things are falling into place.It is until the language expert â€Å"Professor Bertram Potts† realizes that his section on slang is seen to be outdated. In this regard, he decided to venture into the outside world to do his research. In the process he met a nightclub singer â€Å"Sugarpuss O'Shea† who has problems with her mobster boyfriend and needs a place to hide in. The professors allow Sugarpuss to live with them and have been effective in teaching the professors more than the slang language by livening up their academic lives with nylons and conga lines.Professor Potts becomes obsessed with Sugarpuss but when the boyfriend of Sugarpass wants her back, things have started to become complicated. At the end of the movie, Professor Potts has outwitted the boyfriend of Sugarpass and pursue his love for Sugarpuss by proposing marriage to her. In light of the story of the movie, it can be said that being smart does not only mean being good at the teachings o f the book. Hence, the characteristic of being smart and intelligent can never be learned in a secluded area, more specifically in the four corners of the class.As such, the story of the movie has depicted these notions on the realizations of Professor Potts, that his knowledge in slang word is seen to be outdated and requires a need to venture in the real or outside world to be able to acquire new information. Likewise, it is seen that the purpose of receiving a formal education is to guide the person and empower an individual towards the achievement of his or her aspirations in the future. In thoughts, it is seen the formal education is essential to teach and render an individual with all the appropriate and needed knowledge that a person needs to acquire.Hence, there is a need to balance the formal and informal knowledge that can never be acquired and taught in the classroom, which the personal life experiences can only edify. Likewise, the movie â€Å"Ball of Fire† has de picted that the learning that occurs in the school of hard knocks is as essential as that which is taught in the formal education that leads to a balance between the real-life education and the importance of knowledge that the book provides.In the end, it can be said that the movie is set to provide a better understanding about the importance of knowledge that can be acquired in both real-life learning and formal education. As such, it can be seen that knowledge which can only be acquired in real life experiences is as essential as the education that can be learned from school. Lord of The Flies Human Allegory Essay

In Lord of the Flies William Golding uses allegories to illustrate the human psyche. Different characters are used to represent different parts of an individual’s mental structure: the impulses of the Id, the rationality of the Ego, and the moral understanding of the Superego. Golding carefully describes each character’s actions to coincide with each part of the psyche. Jack, Piggy, Simon, and Ralph are characters in the story that represent the psyche. According to Sigmun Freud, the Id is the impulsive part of the psyche. Evidence of this is the killing of the sow. To elaborate, the killing of the sow has been deemed a â€Å"symbolic rape,† symbolizing man’s sexual desire. The manner that the boys go about in killing the pigs is based on sexual desire and violence; all parts of the Id. An example of this is the boys chant they recite after the hunt, as well as the lust they receive when chasing the sow. The pig’s head also represents the Id in the boys. The pig’s head becomes evidence of their atrocities brought on by impulsive and animalistic behavior. The boys wanted satisfaction, ultimately achieving it through the brutal murder of the sow. Furthermore, Golding’s Jack has been interpreted to personify the Id. An exemplar is his thirst for blood which gives him gratification. He takes great pride in hunting and killing pigs, eventually smearing the pig’s blood on his face. This is violent and primal, not very productive for the group and is meant as a source of satisfaction. Hunting should be pointless, the boys are on an island surrounded by fruit. Golding states, â€Å"†¦gorging fruit in the forest.†(pg.25). Jack is too busy wanting to hunt that he forgets about being rescued. One instance being early in the novel when a boat appears on the horizon; Jack allows the fire to burn out while hunting; eliminating aspirations of rescue. Moreover, as Jack embodies the Id; Ralph represents the ego. Ralph epitomizes the reasoning among the group. Sine Ralph is the leader, it becomes his responsibility to keep order. The ego makes rational choices while satisfying the Id. For instance, Ralph’s main task is to keep the order and control Jack and his impulses. Ralph delegates jobs: Jack and the choir become hunters and the rest will build the huts. For example, Ralph comes up with the idea the idea that who ever holds the conch gets to talk. Also, Ralph is the one who comes up with the idea to get the boys names. Golding writes,†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦If a ship comes near the island†¦We must make a fire.†(pg.35). This quote shows Ralph’s rational thinking on how to get rescued. Ralph thinks of the sensible thing to do for instance, Golding states â€Å"What was the sensible thing to do?†(pg.196). Due to Ralph’s rational thinking, he has  been interpreted to manifest the ego. Furthermore, readers have drawn conclusions that Piggy represents the super ego, Piggy acts like the conscience for the group; for example, Golding inscribes â€Å"What’s grown-ups goin’ to think? Young Simon was murdered.†(pg.157). This quote communicates how Piggy attempts to guilt the boys for the terrible crime they committed. Piggy comprehends moral values and tries to guilt Ralph for participating in the murder of Simon. Throughout the story Piggy constantly reminds Jack and Ralph about the priorities. He nags them incessantly about the fire, as well as; the importance of the conch and assemblies, the proper way to do a task, and how to act properly. Golding writes, â€Å"There was no Piggy to talk sense.†(pg.196). This quote justifies how Piggy acts like the boys conscience. In addition to Piggy, Simon has also been interpreted to represent the super ego based on his actions throughout the novel. For example, when the little kids wanted the fruit Simon got it down for them. Another example is when Simon attempts to warn the others that the beast is them. Golding states, â€Å"‘You knew, didn’t you? I’m part of you?†(pg.136). Moreover, Simon’s moral values become evident when he gives meat to Piggy. Golding exclaims, â€Å"†¦Shoved the piece of meat over the rocks to Piggy.† Simons moral values on how to treat others, based on his actions in the novel clarifies how readers could draw conclusions that he embodies the super ego. Subsequently, interpretations on the novel have revealed Piggy’s death to represent the Id’s complete take over of the island. Golding exclaims, â€Å"The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow †¦the body of Piggy was gone.†(pg.180). Without Piggy, there is no moral reasoning to help make the right choices. After Piggy dies, Jack attempts to kill Ralph to eradicate rational thinking. This is an example of the Id’s superiority and strength over the ego, without the presence of the super ego. Without the super ego deciding the right from the wrong, the Id will take over. In the novel, had the naval officer not intervene, Jack would have completed the Id’s takeover of the egos by killing Ralph. As a final point, Golding uses Freud’s philosophies regarding the psyche to show human nature in Lord of the Flies. Ralph, Jack and Piggy represent the different parts of the psyche and what happens when one falls. Jack represents the Id with his impulses to kill. Piggy represents the super ego through his moral understanding, while Ralph symbolizes the ego, caught between the Id and super ego. Golding illustrates in â€Å"Lord of the Flies† that the Id is most powerful and comes out when a man is subjected to a primitive mindset. The effects unemployment has on crime Unemployment occurs when people are without jobs and they have actively looked for  work  within the past four weeks.  The unemployment rate is a measure of the prevalence of unemployment and it is calculated as a percentage by dividing the number of unemployed individuals by all individuals currently in the  labour force (the  International Labour Organization). There never occurs full employment in the country. But there are different methods of combating unemployment. There are some countries that reached a minimum unemployment figure. A good example of this are the post World War II era when there was a huge economic growth occurring. e.g. the United Kingdom in the 1950s and 60s when the average unemployment rate was at about 1.6 % (John Sloman (2004).  Economics. Penguin. p.  811), and in Australia in the 1945  government established a policy of full employment, which lasted until the 1970s when the government ran out of money. The latest statistics for UK unempl oyment is The unemployment rate stands at 7.7% down 0.1% over the quarter. 29.19 million people were in work in July to September according to the labour force survey (LFS). The number of people employed was up by 167,000 this quarter and up by nearly 300,000 from last year. (HRM Guide, 13 October 2010) As anyone can derive, there is a relationship between crime and unemployment. There have been a lot of studies into this topic as a low level of crime is socially desirable. Therefore, governments of all countries have tried to combat the problem of rising crime levels. A good example of the latter is post Soviet Russia. Crime rate in the 1980s increased to very high levels. This was the outcome of the collapse of the Soviet Union, because with it everything collapsed the law enforcement systems, social security, and minimal standard of living. And, obviously, these are the perfect conditions for an outbreak of crime. Extreme poverty and unpaid wages, which resulted from a suffering economy, have led to property crimes, theft and counterfeiting. By the early 1990s, theft, burglary, and other property crimes accounted for nearly two-thirds of all crime in the country.  There was a rapid growth of violent crime, including homicides.( Crime in the Soviet Era  Federal Research Division,  Library of Congress). In present times, though, Russia has done well in fighting this nightmare of crime. There are many other countries that have fought and are still combating this problem. By the use of the example of Russia, I wanted to show that unemployment is considered a very important cause of crime in any country, together with law enforcement problems and also labour market opportunities. Economic theories of the effect of crime on unemployment  « how many resources and how much punishment should  be used to enforce different kinds of legislation? Put equivalently, although more strangely, how many offenses should  be permitted and how many offenders should go unpunished. Gary Becker (1968). Becker (1968) is considered to be the first work which formally analyses the issue of crime using an economic model. Becker links the problem of crime to social welfare. It is assumed that criminals are as rational as any other person. And, therefore, if they are involved i n crime activities, it means that they are better off by doing so. The issue of opportunity cost comes up quite frequently in these discussions. If a potential offender, despite the knowledge that he has about the punishment he will get if he commits a crime, still goes and does it it means that the reward that he is aiming at justifies the probability of him getting caught and convicted. When looking at crime, the concept of rationality is applied not only to criminals, but to all parties involved judges, policemen, legislators and potential victims. So, when the institutions that control crime are designed, their main concern is not the crimes that are committed and how much they weigh, but the costs that occur to the society. As an example, if it takes half of the population to be turned into judges, policemen, etc in order to decrease the crime rate by 70%, it would probably not happen in the real life, because the cost of doing so is too high. Becker constructed a model, which identifies optimal levels of punishment by minimising the social c ost induced by both combating crime and crimes themselves. This model predicts the aggregated supply of offences. The number of offences a criminal would commit, according to Becker, would be negatively related to the probability of apprehension and the severity of punishment. It also includes a certain u term, which includes all other variables that can influence the predicted outcome e.g. income from legal and illegal activities, education, risk aversion, etc. But, this variable u is not explicitly studied by Becker. This work was later on continued by Ehrlich (1972, 1973). Ehrlich states that a person is able to spend time on both legal and illegal activities, but the amount of time that one dedicates to any of those activities depends on the amount of utility (return) that he gets from it. By 1973, Ehrlich designed a mathematical model that describes this relationship. Ehrlich bases his model on the decision making under uncertainty theory. The assumption used is that a person can switch between legal and illegal activities during their lifetime, depending, as I have mentioned earlier, on the amount of utility they get from them (activities). There is no training and no costs involved in changing between the two. So, it is obvious, that an increase in opportunities in the legal market, e.g. higher probability of employment and higher wages would increase the expected utility gained from legal activities and so and individual, being rational, would spend more time on legal, rather than illegal deeds. Therefore, keeping a low level of unemployment, in theory will decrease the crime level. Cohen and Felson (1979) have proposed that in order for a crime to be done, it need three factors to be satisfied: motivated offenders, suitable victims and the lack of effective legal punishment system. Leading from this, the increase in crime production is caused by an increase in the first two factors under the third an ineffective legal system. This argument only supports the prediction made in Ehrlichs model. We can deduce a positive relationship between the rate of unemployment and the crime rate. On the other side of the argument, Cantor and Land (1985) have predicted a negative relationship between the rate of unemployment and crime based on the works of Cohen and Felson. They suggested that the higher the unemployment, the less people there are in the second category (suitable victims). If there are more unemployed, those who lost their jobs stay at home and therefore avoid the risk of having their house robbed, for example. Also, a higher rate of unemployment is a sign of a recession, which means that there is less for the offenders to steal, for example. So, higher unemployment may reduce property crimes. Also, using the same logic, we can deduce a reduction in violent crimes again through a reduction in that second factor suitable victims. Statistically, most violent crimes are committed by strangers, so if you stay at home, you avoid that risk. Cantor and Land have designed an empirical model which tests the motivation and opportunity effects of unemployment rate on crime. There are several equations under estimation. The dependant variables include the differentiated levels of crimes like homicide, rape, assault, robbery, theft, burglary, etc. Independent variables are either up to date or differentiated unemployment rates. The argument in this paper is that in case of a financial crisis those that become unemployed will receive some unemployment benefits, etc. And therefore they might not turn to criminal activities straight away, but after they are under financial pressure in case unemployment benefits or an alternative source of income expires. This model has been criticized by several researchers in this area. For example, Greenberg in 2001 has argued that those who become unemployed might not have the sufficient resources to keep themselves, while out of work. This factor might make them engage in illegal activities, which contradicts the outcomes on the Cantor and Land model. He also questioned the mathematical approach of the model. Greenberg (2001) claimed that it is mathematically unacceptable if the differencing procedure is only carried out on the crime rates but not the explanatory variables. Also, Hale and Sabbagh (1991) have questioned mainly the empirical work of Cantor and Land. The ideas of integration and cointegration were introduced to show that their models  are mis-specified. Leading from this, it is argued that any conclusions drawn from their work are probably unreliable. There are other papers that only try to derive the net effect of unemployment on crime, rather than taking into account motivation and opportunity costs. A good example is a paper written by Fleisher (1963). In it, the author argues that there is a positive correlation between parent unemployment and youth crime. If there is a high level of unemployment in the country, adults become unemployed and it becomes very hard for them to provide for their children, who, therefore, might turn to illegal activities. Fleisher uses time series data to test this relationship because it gives a more thorough view of the relationship of different variable in a long period of time. The prediction of the model is justified using an OLS estimation and shows a positive and significant correlation between unemployment rate and youth crime. Some researchers preferred to use panel data to investigate this area. For example, a paper written by Raphael and Winter-Ebmer (2001) uses this approach. The argument in this paper is that there is a dependent relationship between crime and unemployment. One might be the cause of the other. E.g. high crime rates in the country will deter investment and so add to an increase in unemployment, which is what happens in countries like Russia. Although, one very interesting point of findings of this paper is the negative relationship between unemployment and murder. The explanation of this can potentially be found in Ehrlichs three factor model. Unemployment could decrease the potential interaction between a criminal and a victim.

Alfred Tennyson and His Work Alfred Tennyson was born on August 6th, 1809, at Somersby, Lincolnshire, fourth of twelve children of George and Elizabeth Tennyson. Tennyson, said to be the best poet of the Victorian era and his poetry will be discussed in this essay. Tennyson had a lifelong fear of mental illness, because several men in his family had a mild form of epilepsy, which then was thought of as a shameful disease. His father and brother Arthur made their epilepsy worse by excessive drinking. His brother Edward had to be put in a mental institution after 1833, and he spent a few weeks himself under doctor's care in 1843. In the late twenties his father's physical and mental condition got worse, and he became paranoid, abusive, and violent. In 1827 Tennyson escaped his troubled home when he followed his two older brothers to Trinity College, Cambridge, where his teacher was William Whewell. Because each of them had won university prizes for poetry the Tennyson brothers became well known at Cambridge. In 1829 The Apostles, an undergraduate club, invited him to join. The members of this group would remain Tennyson's friends all his life. Arthur Hallam was the most important of these friendships. Hallam, a brilliant Victorian young man was recognized by his peers as having unusual promise. He and Tennyson knew each other only four years, but their intense friendship had a major influence on the poet. On a visit to Somersby, Hallam met and later became engaged to Emily Tennyson, and the two friends looked forward to a life-long companionship. Hallam died from illness in 1833 at the age of 22 and shocked Tennyson profoundly. His grief lead to most of his best poetry, including "In Memoriam", "The Passing of Arthur", "Ulysses", and "Tithonus". Since Tennyson was always sensitive to criticism, The bad reviews of his 1832 poems hurt him greatly. Critics in those days took great joy in the harshness of their reviews. John Wilson Croker's harsh criticisms of some of the poems he wrote kept Tennyson from publishing again for another nine years. The success of his 1842 poems made Tennyson a popular poet, and in 1845 he got a government pension of 200 pounds a year, which helped him with his financial difficulties. The success of "The Princess" and "In Memoriam" and his appointment as Poet Laureate in 1850 finally established him as the most popular poet of the Victorian era. By now Tennyson, only 41, had written some of his greatest poetry, but he continued to write and to gain popularity. Google’s competitive environment With the advent of the internet, competition within the industry of searching the web has intensified. Google offers a wide range of services, so it only practical that google has its fair share of competitors. Sites like facebook and twitter offer competition because users are now relying on these services for referrals instead of using traditional search engines. Google also has competition for the ad dollar from the traditional form of advertising: TV, radio, Newspapers, magazines and billboards. In addition, with the development of apps, users are now accessing e-commerce directly from these apps, instead of search engines. Google also offers product and services that comprise of Gmail, YouTube and google docs that competes with new and established companies that offer information, communication and entertainment services. Therefore, google competes with most of the internet (Dess & Miller, 2007). Google receives competition from its rivals on the internet for the market share and financial performance. Google has introduced google chrome, which is cloud-computing software that allows its users to upload and download documents on the internet. However, the large market share is held by Microsoft’s office. Moreover, google has competition in the mobile industry from its android operating system. (Gru? nig & Ku? hn, 2005). To compete with Apple’s iPhone and to increase market share of ads displayed on smart phones, Google launched their android operating system. Although google receives stiff competition from its rivals, it still holds a high market share because of its brand positioning (Casson, 2004). Hence, Google holds such a great market share; advertisers would not receive nearly the same amount of ad exposure using a different search engine. Google has continued to make a net profit even as its rivals net plummeted; probably the most important aspect of a company’s financial performance to a potential investor is the earnings per share ratio. It is widely acknowledged that Google puts great stock in being able to show investors that their money is safe. This company’s earnings per share ratio had grown impressively in the four year period from 2007 to 2010, with only a slight decline when the recession hit the hardest. This shows that Google is a true powerhouse, especially when compared to their top competitors, Yahoo and Microsoft. With Google increasing their percentage of searches, in comparison to all other search entities, it is easy to see that Yahoo and Microsoft are losing the battle against this Internet behemoth. In the period from 2008 to 2010, Microsoft maintained a constant net profit margin (Hitt, Ireland & Hoskisson, 2009). This would indicate that Microsoft is outperforming Google, but these impressive numbers do not tell the story for the segment of Microsoft that is competing against Google. The operating profit margins during this period for Microsoft’s online services business unit are embarrassing at best, with negative margins in 2009 and 2010. This indicates that Microsoft is hemorrhaging money at an increasing rate while it tries to compete with Google. Similarly, Yahoo shows declining net profit margins for every year from 2007 to 2010, with margins for 2009 and 2010 dropping below 0. 1. (see appendix).
